Primedia Unlimited is a leading Out of Home media provider in South Africa. It opened its doors in September 2004 and since then has grown into a formidable presence in South Africa’s media marketplace by offering ‘Impossible to Ignore’ platforms that constantly strive to bring innovation to the media industry. New media offerings such as Salon Media; Fitting Exposure and Smartbench are key elements to the ever growing business. Omar Essack has worked in media across a number of disciplines for 30 years. He became the youngest Managing Director of a private radio station in South Africa in 1998 at 32.
As an executive director on the board of the listed Kagiso Media Limited, he was responsible for all the group’s broadcasting assets and part of the group strategy development team.
He led the acquisition of South Africa’s most prolific TV content production company in 2008 and developed the group’s digital media focus, resulting in the formation of Kagiso New Media. In 2009 he established a radio consulting company on behalf of Kagiso Media in India, with a view to eventually identifying acquisition opportunities in that market.
In late 2013, Omar spearheaded the launch of Kagiso Media’s first wholly owned Free to Air TV channel, GLOW TV. From 2013 Omar has been heavily involved in assessing opportunities in the rest of Africa, including Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya and has a strong network in some of those markets.
His education includes a post graduate Drama & Literature qualification from the University of KZN, final year Cum Laude; courses at Georgetown University – Washington DC, the Gordon Institute of Business Science in South Africa, Executive Education at Harvard Business School and a Management Advancement Program in Media & Entertainment with a focus on Digital Media strategy, through IESE Business School with UCLA Anderson.
On 01 January 2017 he joined Primedia Broadcasting as its Chief Executive Officer.
On 1 April 2018 he was appointed as the CEO of the Primedia Group.
Chief Executive Officer
JD Henderson began his career with Primedia Unlimited 11 years ago with X/procure® Software SA as Sales and Marketing Director. JD has a passion for developing people and business and his successful track record resulted in him being promoted to Managing Director of this business unit in 2009.
During his tenure as Managing Director the business was expanded by 2 new start ups in XP Digital and XP Liquor. In January 2016 JD took over the Management of Primedia Instore in conjunction with his role in the X/procure Cluster. After delivering successful results for the group for both the X/procure Cluster and Primedia Instore, JD was promoted to the Chief Executive Officer of Primedia Unlimited in January 2018.
Chief Operating Officer
Grant Willemse took up the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Primedia Unlimited at the beginning of May 2007. Willemse has an undeniable creative energy and business acumen. As winner of a Cannes Media Lion and the 2003 AMASA Roger Garlick Award for his Osram Light Bulbs ‘Studio Lights’ campaign, Willemse has never been short of innovative ideas and has always played an invaluable role for the company he keeps. Chairperson of the Financial Directors Forum of the ACA (Association for Communication and Advertising) and a member of the ACA Operations Committee, Willemse is exceptionally well-recognised by his peers in the industry and has been a mentor and friend to many.
Chris joined Primedia in 2008 as Group Finance Manager and was appointed Chief Financial Officer in June 2011. Prior to that he had served as Financial Director of a division of Servest (Pty) Ltd. He worked within KPMG’s Hospitality and Leisure business unit for three years and prior to that had spent two years with Credit Suisse in London. Chris qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) on completion of his articles at KPMG in 2002 and he holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Accounting degree, both from the University of Witwatersrand.
Group Financial Manager
Retha has been appointed as the Group Financial Manager from January 2012. Her career spans 20 years across various industries, the latest was as Head of Finance for the Kumnandi Food Company, the largest KFC Franchise holder in South Africa. Retha’s qualifications include a BCom Accounting degree (Rau), BCompt Honours degree (Unisa) and a Masters of Business Leadership (Unisa SBL). She has proven all-round skills in senior Financial roles and her management skills together with strategic planning and execution abilities rank very highly.
Human Capital Manager
Beverley was appointed as the Group Human Capital Manager from February 2018. She began her career in insurance and through ongoing studies and her passion for Training and Development of staff entered the field of Human Resource Management and Development. Beverley joined the Primedia Group in 2008 and has worked for various divisions.
